Start with the simple stuff
A cold furnace in a Westchester January is stressful. The good news is that the most common causes are simple. Walk through these before you assume the worst.
- Thermostat set to HEAT, not COOL or FAN
- Furnace filter clean, not gray and clogged
- Power switch by the unit still on
- Breaker not tripped
- Gas valve open and pilot or igniter working
When the filter is the problem
A clogged filter chokes airflow. The furnace overheats, then shuts itself off as a safety step. You feel cold air or short bursts of heat.
Swap the filter and give it an hour. If heat returns, set a reminder to change it every 90 days through the season.
When to call us
If the burners will not light, you smell gas, or the unit cycles on and off fast, stop and call. Those point to a part that needs a trained hand.
